Official rules
- US State Department photo requirements
- UK passport photo rules (GOV.UK)
- Canadian passport photo rules
The guide lines show typical framing for each size. Your passport office has the final say on head size, background and lighting.
How to use it
- Take a photo against a plain, light wall, facing the camera, with even light and no shadows.
- Choose the photo and pick the passport size.
- Zoom and drag until your head fits the oval and your eyes sit near the line.
- Save the single photo, or the 4 × 6 inch sheet for printing.
Check the official rules
Each country sets its own rules for head size, background, glasses and expression, and they change. This tool gets the size and framing right; read your passport office’s current rules before you print.
Why a 4 × 6 sheet
Most photo kiosks and online print shops print 4 × 6 inch (10 × 15 cm) photos cheaply. The sheet fits several passport photos on one print, at the exact physical size when printed at 300 dpi without scaling.
FAQ
Questions
Are my photos uploaded anywhere?
No. The page reads your file in this browser tab and does the work on your device. Nothing is sent to a server, and closing the tab clears it. You can switch on airplane mode after the page loads and the tool still works.
Will this guarantee my photo is accepted?
No tool can promise that. The size and framing will match the preset, but the passport office also checks lighting, background, expression and image quality. Follow their checklist.
Does it remove the background?
No. Use a plain, light background when you take the photo. Most passport offices reject edited backgrounds anyway.
What size is a US passport photo?
2 x 2 inches (51 x 51 mm), with the head measuring between 1 and 1 3/8 inches from chin to top of head, according to the US State Department.
